DWP ‘Working Hard’ as It Issues Update on Pension Credit Processing Times

pension credit news

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a significant update on Pension Credit processing times. Recent pension credit news highlights a surge in applications and a renewed focus on clearing backlogs. This follows changes to Winter Fuel Payments, which now require eligibility for Pension Credit to receive the energy bill support.

Why Pension Credit Demand Has Risen Sharply

The latest pension credit news reveals a record spike in applications. Between July 2024 and February 2025, DWP received 300,000 Pension Credit applications. This marks a sharp increase from the 251,100 applications received during the entire previous year. The main driver is the new means-testing for Winter Fuel Payments. Pensioners must now qualify for Pension Credit to access this crucial support for heating bills.

How the DWP Is Tackling the Backlog

DWP leaders have acknowledged the pressure caused by this surge. To address the growing backlog, the department has reassigned over 500 staff to process claims faster. The latest figures show that 78 percent of new Pension Credit claims are now processed within the target of 50 working days. This is a major improvement from previous months, when outstanding claims peaked at 85,500 in December 2024. By late February 2025, this number had fallen to 33,700, returning to normal levels.

Faster Processing Times and Record Clearances

The DWP’s efforts have led to record claim clearances. Between July 2024 and February 2025, the department cleared 232,200 Pension Credit claims, nearly doubling the rate from the previous year. The average actual clearance time for a claim is now 45 working days, well within the planned 50-day target. The week beginning January 20, 2025, saw the highest number of claims cleared in a single week, with 13,400 processed- almost triple the average weekly rate before the Winter Fuel Payment changes.

How Many Pensioners Are Being Helped

Between July 2024 and February 2025, the government awarded 117,800 claims for pension credit, marking a 64 percent increase over the same period last year. However, not all applications are successful. In the same period, 114,500 claims were not awarded, more than doubling the previous year’s figure. Despite this, the overall increase in successful awards means tens of thousands more pensioners are now receiving vital financial support.

Who Qualifies for Pension Credit and How to Apply

Pension Credit remains a key benefit for low-income pensioners. To qualify for Guarantee Credit, you must be of state pension age and have a weekly income below £227.10 if single or £346.60 for couples. Savings Credit is available only to those who reached state pension age before April 2016 or have a partner who did. Even a small award can unlock extra help with housing, heating, and council tax bills.

Applying has become easier with the updated online claim form, which takes an average of just 16 minutes to complete. The DWP encourages all eligible pensioners to check their entitlement using the official Pension Credit calculator on GOV.UK.

What the Latest Pension Credit News Means for Pensioners

The most recent pension credit news underscores the DWP’s commitment to improving processing times and supporting more pensioners. The department is “working hard” to meet its published standards and ensure that older people get the help they need quickly. With processing times down and record numbers of claims being cleared, more pensioners are receiving crucial financial support to help with the rising cost of living.

The DWP continues to monitor application volumes and adjust resources as needed. Pensioners are urged not to delay their applications, as even a small Pension Credit award can open the door to significant extra benefits.
